We bought our property in Costa Rica in 2010. We built our US mortgage investing business from here.
This is our home base though we now travel as much as 10 months a year.
A lot of people (family, friends, and those we meet as we travel around the world) frequently ask us these questions.
Why we chose to live in Costa Rica
Why live in Costa Rica? Why retire in Costa Rica?
- The people and lifestyle: voted one of the Happiest countries, and one of the Blue Zones where people live the longest and healthiest lives
- The beauty: oceans, mountains, valleys, rain / cloud forests
- The abundance of wildlife, flowers, fresh fish, fruits and vegetables: year round
- The time zone (Central or Mountain): makes it easy to do business in and stay connected with family in the United States
- The cost of living: more affordable compared to Hawaii and San Francisco
- Good infrastructure: for a Digital Nomad and someone with a Backpack business
- The convenience to fly to: with daily non-stops from several major cities in the US and worldwide
- The safety: compared to other Central American countries
- Climate mas o menos: mostly good when there’s a nice breeze, but there are times of the year when humidity is really high and with lots of bugs (April, May).

The benefits are all the reasons we chose to live here, including: (depends on where you choose to live)
- Pura Vida lifestyle - 2 sides (Life is good + Sh_ _ happens): 🙂 a healthy life outlook; ☹️ sometimes dealing with locals
- We were immediately on vacation: When we were building our US company in CR, we worked hard all day, then when done, stepped outside to our balcony, or drove to beachfront restaurant 5 minutes away for Happy Hour.
- During work breaks, just look up and enjoy the ocean on one side, and the jungle on the other
What are the CHALLENGES of living in Costa Rica?
- It’s still a 3rd world country: but working on becoming a 2nd with infrastructure like hi-speed internet, good roads, services
- Inventory management: is still an issue with different products like bottled water, etc. that could run out.
- Amazon delivery: takes about 2 weeks and could cost about 60% more in taxes. There are ways for dealing with this, and it’s good to practice Minimalism anyway.

- Rent first for 2-3 years before buying: How do you really know this place is for you?

- Buy: with an option agreement, and seller financing if possible.
- Tranquilo! Understand and embrace the culture, and this will make it easier to "narrow the gap" with your expectations.
